THE MATCH

The 0-0 in the end satisfies everyone: England who were looking for first place in the group and Slovenia who with the third draw in a row still secured the pass for the round of 16 as third. England were looking for confirmation from the point of view of the game, which appeared lackluster in this first part of the European Championship. The game was seen little and was not liked by the many fans in the stands who booed Southgate’s national team, but it was enough to secure the pass for the round of 16. Southgate places Gallagher alongside Rice in midfield. For the rest, the lineup was essentially confirmed with Kane as an offensive terminal. Behind him Saka, Bellingham and Foden, on the other side the Slovenian coach Kek brings Sesko and Sporar onto the field, Elsnik plays in midfield with Cerin, Mlakar and Stojanovic on the sidelines. Ilicic on the bench. Cautious start for both teams although Slovenia tries to put pressure on England’s ball possession.

England Slovenia

In the 5th minute Slovenia becomes dangerous in attack but Sesko’s shot is weak. England had control of the game but were unable to threaten until the 20th minute when Saka scored but the goal was disallowed due to Foden’s offside. The pace is slow and Slovenia is not in great danger despite Harry Kane’s incursions. The first half slipped away like this, without any major shocks and ended with boos from the fans of the Three Lions national team. At the start of the second half, Southgate replaced Gallagher with Manchester United gem Mainoo but the inertia of the match didn’t seem to change much compared to the first half with England trying to gain possession and Slovenia defending and restarting. Only at the end does Harry Kane try to break through the Slovenian wall but the result remains stuck at 0-0 which is enough for both to go to the round of 16.
