An absence that makes noise, that of Remco Evenepoel at the national championship scheduled for Sunday. The reigning Belgian champion has announced that he will not race due to a cold that hit him in the last few hours.

Soudal Quick Step explains that it is only a slight ailment but that it is better not to take risks in view of the Tour de France, Remco Evenepoel’s next big goal. «Even if it is just a cold, Remco and our team have decided that, after a prolonged period of work at altitude, it is better for him not to tackle what will be a competitive and demanding race so as not to compromise his preparation for the next Tour de France and the Olympic Games”.

«Winning the title last year and wearing this beautiful shirt was very special and I am very sorry that I was unable to defend my title due to a minor illness. Everyone knows that when I race I want to give my all and on Sunday I couldn’t run at 100%. I wish my teammates good luck and I hope that the shirt stays in our home” explained Evenepoel.
