Sito Pons reveals the reasons for Pons Racing’s exit from Moto2: ‘If we weren’t entering MotoGP, it wasn’t worth it’

Pons Racing left the Moto2 World Championship at the end of last season, despite being one of the longest-serving teams in the paddock and having achieved good results – particularly in Moto2, where it has competed since 2010 after a spell in the premier class.

A decision that was surprising at the time and which Sito Pons has now explained to Solo Moto: ‘From 2010 until last year, our career developed in the Moto2 category. We wanted to move to MotoGP, but due to life circumstances, we were unable to enter the premier class. So, with age and everything, I decided that if we weren’t getting into MotoGP, it wasn’t worth it anymore. We had already achieved a lot in Moto2‘.

In its origins, Pons Racing started in the former premier class – the 500cc – also achieving victories and podiums with riders such as Álex Crivillé and Carlos Checa. From 1996 to 2005, they competed only in 500cc/MotoGP, with Loris Capirossi and Max Biaggi battling for the title and achieving third places in the championship.

After a hiatus, Sito Pons’ outfit returned to 250cc in 2009, moving up to Moto2 the following year. The high point was Pol Espargaró’s title in the intermediate category in 2013, but it was also a launching pad for other riders now making headlines in MotoGP – Aleix Espargaró, Álex Rins, Fabio Quartararo and Maverick Viñales are some examples. More recently, in 2019, Pons participated in MotoE with Sete Gibernau and was champion in 2020, 2021 (Jordi Torres) and 2023 (Mattia Casadei).
