Elisa Longo Borghini she was a great protagonist of the Tour of Switzerland Women 2024. The Italian champion finished in third place in the general classification after trying in every way, with the support of “her” Lidl Trek, to attack the league leaders Demi Vollering during the last stage. In the end, however, the Dutch rider from Sd Worx-Protime managed to manage the various situations that arose throughout the day, then managing to set the final seal by winning the finish line in Champagne. For Longo Borghini, however, there is no shortage of reasons for satisfaction.
“We wanted to race hard – the words of Longo Borghini to our microphones at the end of the race – Then, a sort of poker game came out when the breakaway took off. We had faith in Brodie Chapman, who was virtually third overall, and so we let it go. The moment the Sd Worx-Protime started the chase, we decided to go all out on the last climb, with a great pace Gaia Realini for me”.
The plan seemed to work, also because Longo Borghini found Chapman herself along the way: “She did a super job, getting me back on the break. In the final it was a roulette and Vollering was simply the strongest in the sprint – the Italian’s comment – I have to congratulate my team, because we ran really well, my teammates were splendid. I thank you, I think it was a good collective demonstration.”
Elisa Longo Borghini closes her 2024 Tour of Switzerland with a smile: “Have I given everything? I think I left my lungs on the road somewhere. Maybe some farmer will find them and can get them back for me…”.
