Glory for two athletes from Cuneo at “Veteran Volleyball Tournament, event held for the first time in Italy, in Milan, under the aegis of International Veteran Volleyball Association.

Thirty nations from all over the world were on the field for a total of over 400 participating athletes who battled from 11 to 15 June.

In the over 60 beach volleyball category they climb to the top step of the podium Paolo Bina And Alberto Candela, culminating a ride free of setbacks.

In the first qualifying round the Cuneo pair got off to a good start, beating Hungary 21/17 and Lithuania 21/9. In the last match of the qualifications, the strong Germany, seeded number 1, was defeated with a heart-pounding 25/24 at killer point.

In the Italian quarter-finals against Switzerland, finalists in 2022, literally defeated 21/17 and 21/15.

Semifinal against Spain, beaten 23/21 in the first set (after Paolo and Alberto found themselves 20 to 15 down). The second ends 21 to 17, opening the doors for the final where the Cuneo players meet the Germans again, victorious in their draw.

The final was very tight and played point to point. Italy starts badly (6 to 3), but little by little manages to recover until they overtake at 16 all, and then close at the last gasp 21 to 19. Cuneo couple always ahead in the second set, reached at 15 equal but capable of making the final push to close 21-17.

Beautiful and well-deserved gold for Paolo and Alberto who concluded the tournament without losing a single set.

The emotion for this undertaking is great. At the end of the last match, the players let out a liberating scream and a hug of mutual gratitude. Matches played at times bordering on perfection. Lots of training and sacrifices to get to the top at this world event.

THANK YOU to all those who worked hard to play and engage our Masters.
