The Spanish champion explains the reasons behind his choice to join the official team in 2025: “Everyone wants the best and the best bike is the red one, the Ducati.” And on the 2024 World Championship: “I’m not at the level of Martin and Bagnaia, but victory will come”

Marc Marquez is the rider of the moment in MotoGP. Despite not winning any Grands Prix, the Spanish champion took seven races to convince Ducati to “promote” him from the Gresini team, inserting him into the 2025 factory team. A climb that took place on the track, as the top 3 in the World Championship says after a third of the way, but even with words. The either/or imposed before the Italian GP was emblematic, refusing the possible move to Prima Pramac. The choice thus triggered the domino effect on the market, which became effervescent with the moves of Jorge Martin to Aprilia and Enea Bastianini to the KTM army.

SELFISHNESS

Marquez’s behavior has caused discussion for its rigidity. And Marc himself explained the reasons for this harshness during the Spanish radio program El Larguero: “In many cases, at these levels, you have to be selfish. Everyone wants the best and the best bike is the red one, the Ducati. To have it you have to play all the cards. And what matters most is the track.” The eight-time world champion thus begins to explain the reasons behind his move to the factory team: “I am in Ducati thanks to Gigi Dall’Igna. I don’t know what they promised Martin. I can say what they explained to me: the Ducati engineers have analyzed my growth with the 2023 bike in a particular way.” And the Spaniard goes into detail.

Conditions

Moving to the official team means having the obligation to fight for the World Championship in 2025. A fundamental step to dream much bigger than this season. Marc explains the reasons for such insistence: “There are three crucial reasons. First of all at the moment we are not fighting on equal terms: usually, from one year to the next, we improve by two tenths per lap, which at the end of the race translate into four seconds, even if it’s all relative. Second reason: I wouldn’t have left a satellite team to join another customer team. The third reason concerns my sponsors: I couldn’t decide my future in November-December.”

Will market dynamics influence the 2024 championship? Marquez doesn’t think so and considers Martin among the favourites, despite already being betrothed to the Aprilia team: “Knowing Dall’Igna, Jorge will be able to challenge for the title. In Ducati they are very honest, you can win the World Championship on the track with other colours. The championship It’s still a long way off and there are still a lot of points up for grabs, anything can happen.” Marc also analyzes his chances: “For now we’re in the game thanks to some exploits, but it can’t go on like this. Bagnaia and Martin don’t do anything wrong, I have to reach that level.” Precisely to hope for the title, the first victory with Ducati would be needed, but the Spaniard preaches calm: “I am convinced that it will arrive in 2024, but I don’t know when. I have learned not to have expectations”.
