Champions Cup: highlights from Leinster-Stade Toulousain

A memorable match took place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. The 2023/2024 Champions Cup final went to the Stade Toulousain who beat Leinster with a result of 22-31. It took 80 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of extra time to confirm the winner of the most prestigious cup in Europe.

A very hard-fought, beautiful match, full of very tough clashes in which the Irish tried to play while the French withstood a well-organised defense with order and tenacity. The key to the match was certainly the battle in the breakdown where Toulouse prevailed over the Dubliners who lost too many balls in the match points.

In the eighty minutes of regulation, the kicks of Blair Kinghorn and Ross Byrne were the protagonists of the match which brought the result to 15-15 at the final whistle from referee Matthew Carley. In the 20 minutes following the turning point that changed the match.

The yellow at the start of extra time to James Lowe (voluntary forward) allowed the French to send Matthis Lebel in the goal. Thomas Ramos’ precision on the foot did the rest before the second decisive episode; Stade Toulousain second row Richard Arnold, after entering the ruck directly into Cian Healy’s face, received a red card, leaving his teammates with 14 men for the rest of the match.

Leo Cullen’s team attempted a comeback with Josh van der Flier’s try, awarded by the TMO, but it wasn’t enough for the Irish to avoid a third consecutive defeat in the final, again against a French club after the previous matches with La Rochelle.
