They are not very nice, the gestures they make create confusion and even irritation among the citizens, but Ultima Generazione continues in its mission. Yesterday’s protest at the Foro Italico during the Roma Internationalsa generated a stir, angered many tennis fans and the organizers were certainly not enthusiastic. Now, through Alessandro Berti one of the protesters, they try to explain their reasons.

Last Generation, the reasons for the protest

Talking is Alessandro Berti, one of the demonstrators, who was at the Foro Italico yesterday and “glued” himself to the steps of field 12: “Our motivation is simple, that of bringing attention to the Repair Fund, a permanent fund of 20 billion that the Government should guarantee to people affected by extreme events and to do so we also touch on public events of this magnitude. For us they are a tool to carry our message forward”.

Pietrangeli and Camp 12: the double invasion

A coordinated action by Ultima Generazione which it managed to carry out practically at the same time invasion on Pietrangeli (where the match between Cirstea and Keys was taking place) and on court 12 where a doubles match was being played: “These are moments that need to be thought about and planned, there were two pitch invasions and this allowed us to multiply our attention. I was on 12 and I’m one of the people glued to the bleachers. I managed to speak and make myself heard by the whole stand and right at that point on the pitch spectator in front of me was from Campi Bisenzio (one of the areas affected by the events for which Ultima Generazione is fighting, ed), he heard my words then lowered his head because he didn’t feel like siding with me. But he is a person who has been affected by an extreme event and is not being helped by the government”.

“Sinner’s absence? It didn’t matter to us.”

The desire for an important gesture and on a stage on which the attention of many Italians but also abroad are concentrated these days. L’absence of Sinner seems to have had no impact on planning: “Sinner’s presence was indifferent to us, of course you might think so if he had been there too there would have been a greater sounding board but for us it wasn’t a discriminating factor. We didn’t care if Sinner or the number 50 in the world was on that pitch. Yesterday the message arrived. We are not afraid of how we are perceived, our goal is to bring vital issues to the center of the political debate. For this reason, over the last few months we have been organizing popular assemblies in which we talk to citizens and address the local issues that they bring to us.”.

Accusations of violence in the police station

There was no shortage of excited moments at the moment of the Last Generation protest and even more so after the reaction of the International Security and the police forces: “There were many young guys acting as security, one of them was offensive towards me. But these are things that can happen. We experienced violence later in the police station, one of our demonstrators was grabbed twice by the neck by an officer. First he received a prognosis of 15 days then, under pressure from the officers, it was reduced to 1 day. I was not a victim of physical violence, but I also suffered the verbal and psychological ones in the police station”.
