Caivano, the Pink Caravan of the Giro d’Italia arrives: no one to welcome it

It was supposed to be a day of celebration for Caivanoabove all a sign of rebirth, redemption, redemption: the “pink caravan”, the bandwagon that follows the Tour of Italy and fills the streets with sounds, dances and gadgets, stopped in the Livatino park. But in that park waiting for the joyful circus, Caivano didn’t show up.

The moment of the arrival of the forty colored vehicles, accompanied by the music and the enthusiastic voice of the official speaker, is especially embarrassing; the caravan of cars passed through the gate of the park while the official voice shouted an enthusiastic “Hello Caivanooooo”. Behind that gate, however, there was only a small group of twelve wonderful children in cycling suits, accompanied by parents and coaches: 27 people in all. Then a desert dotted only with the uniforms of police officers and carabinieri and a myriad of people from the Giro organisation. Behind, mockingly, the buildings of Green park from which no one moved to participate in the initiative.

The reception had been organized with the usual meticulous care by RCS. Before the start of the event Mauro dall’Olioa long-time navigator of sporting events and project manager of the caravan, had spent words of hope under his helmet of pitch-black curls: «I come from Gescal Of Sesto San Giovanni, I know perfectly well what the kids at Parco Verde feel and I know for a fact that among them there are many talents just waiting to be supported. We are here to give a small sign of hope and redemption.” But no one wanted to accept that signal.

The caravan stopped in a symbolic place of Caivano, in front of the newborn Livatino Park, built on the edge of the sadly well-known Delphinia Sports Center from which come the sounds of the construction site which is renovating it to return it to the community after having erased the signs of violence and degradation. When the prefect arrived in the semi-deserted square Filippo Dispenzacoordinator of the extraordinary commission that has been leading the Municipality of Caivano for seven months after the second consecutive dissolution, darkened: «The absence of Caivano citizenship outrages me – he thundered – it means that certain signals do not want to be collected by this territory ». Dispenza also has other reasons for indignation: «We had the possibility of bringing a thousand children from Caivano to the World Children’s Day which will be held in ten days in Rome: obviously without any expense for the families. We asked for membership in every way, we collected just under two hundred: this too is a sign for me.”

Yesterday morning the prefect Dispenza participated in the celebration of the city’s patron saint, the Madonna of Campiglione and in church he had already spoken to the community, concluding his speech in a very harsh manner: «Democracy means participation, but also vigilance on the part of citizens; if in 2020 sixteen members of the municipal council dissolved in 2018 were re-elected, it means that something is wrong. We all need to examine our consciences.”

They are the children of the «Mary J. Sweet Angels» to provide moments of serenity. They proudly wear the black and orange uniforms and follow the trainer’s instructions with the attitude of fighters Antonio Marzano which challenges them on a path of slalom and balance. They are between 7 and 12 years old, they smile, they sacrifice themselves with three training sessions a week hoping to become two-wheel champions. The children whiz by before the eyes of Faustino Coppison of the immense Fausto, who chats with the journalist Giampaolo Porreca on the sense of sacrifice of the bike and on the message of legality that can be transmitted by sport.

The deputy mayor of the Metropolitan city Giuseppe Cirillomayor of Cardito try to find a positive perspective: «This absence can be a signal to collect, a first step from which to grow a reasoning that leads us to identify the causes and find remedies». The Metropolitan City itself played a central role both in bringing the Giro back to Campania once again and in directing the caravan to Caivano on the day of the first stop of the race which will restart today from Pompeii. For Cirillo it was a source of pride to welcome the caravan as it passed through “his” Cardito where the school children took to the streets to joyfully celebrate the transit of the large pink snake.

The ancient experience as a sportsman does not falter the director of the Giro d’Italia, Mauro Vegni: «We just want to be there. We know we have an important role and we do everything we can to touch every place in Italy, both those of wonder and those of suffering. For us this appointment with Caivano is important, especially for the signal we are giving.”

Yesterday in Caivano the patron saint was celebrated, many explain that the absence at the sporting event was dictated by the concomitance with the celebration, it is also the thought of Don Patriciello: «The people aren’t there because they’re at the patronal celebrations», he cuts short, annoyed, when faced with the question about the desert of the Livatino park.
