Rugby Mantova loses the home derby against Scaligera Verona 20-3. Nothing to do for the red and whites, who in the third to last match of the season still fail to break into the promotion pool. Beyond the first half, Mantova’s approach was the right one, with coach Avanzi’s boys building a lot of play and managing to squeeze Scaligera into their own half of the pitch. Despite constant ball possession, the Virgilians were unable to break the deadlock, except in the 35th minute with a placed shot by Dorella. At the end of the first half, however, the Veronese scored the overtaking goal to make it 3-7 at the break.

In the second half, the game changed hands, also due to some difficult refereeing decisions. The match director allows contacts too much and the ones who pay the price are two Rugby Mantova players out due to injury. In general, very little is played, with Verona managing to take advantage of the few opportunities they had to score the points for the final 20-3. On Sunday 5 May at 3.30pm, Rugby Mantova will face Mirano away in the penultimate match of the promotion pool.

So coach Avanzi: “It was a very bitter match. We have seen some good things, but we still have a lot to grow. Matches like these can help the group mature further. Now let’s look at the next two matches to end the season in the best possible way.”
