Another comeback draw for Michele Mignani’s Palermo who were caught by Ascoli with time up. At Barbera it ends 2-2 due to the goals scored by Brunori and Soleri for the rosanero and the brace by Caligara for the bianconeri from the Marche region. With this result the Rosanero obtain mathematical qualification for the playoffs, but leave the Barbera amidst boos from the fans who protested throughout the match.
Mignani deploys Desplanches from the first minute in place of Pigliacelli in goal; in defense there are Nedelcearu, Lucioni and Ceccaroni; Diakité takes his place on the right wing in midfield with Ranocchia, Gomes, Segre and Lund; Soleri and Brunori in attack.
46″ pass and Palermo takes the lead: long throw from Lucioni, Soleri heads away, maintains possession of the ball and serves Brunori on the right who shoots towards goal without leaving Ascoli goalkeeper Vasquez a chance. The game is played in a surreal atmosphere due to the absence of the Rosanero ultras who contested the team and lost the opening goal. When they entered the stands after 15′ firecrackers were thrown which forced the referee to stop the game for a few minutes Ascoli equalized in the 27th minute with a header from Caligara following a cross from Celia. Soleri took care of it with a diving header following an acrobatic assist from Segre to put Palermo back in the lead.
In the second half the match struggled to take off, Mignani was forced to replace Gomes with Henderson at the start of the second half due to injury, then Ranocchia with Di Francesco due to cramps, then in an attempt to keep Ascoli away from his own goal Brunori with Mancuso, Nedelcearu with Stulac and Ceccaroni with Marconi. But the insult came in the third of five minutes of injury time with Caligara who fired an unstoppable shot from outside the area for Desplanches who slotted it into the corner for the final 2-2.
