It’s goodbye time for Garbine Muguruza. The Spanish tennis player, born in 1993, announced her farewell to professional tennis after 25 years of career during the Laureus World Sports Awards conference. Not just any CV for the former world No. 1, who in the past triumphed at Roland Garros in 2016, at Wimbledon in 2017 and at the WTA Finals in 2021.

Muguruza’s words

“My career has been long, beautiful and full of important moments and anecdotes – declared the tennis player – but I feel that the time has come for me to retire, opening this new chapter in my life, a new era, a new life. If 25 years ago, when I started hitting my first tennis balls, someone had told me that I would become a professional tennis player and that I would realize my dream of becoming number 1 in the world I would have thought this person was crazy.”

“Tennis gave me so much in this first part of my life. It was a fantastic journey in which I experienced unique situations. I have traveled all over the world, coming into contact with many different cultures. I am grateful to all the people who accompanied me during this journey because without them I would never have gotten this far”concluded the former WTA n.1.
