The season of the Diamond League, the most important track and field meeting circuit in the world, kicks off with the first stage which will be held in the early Italian afternoon today. The final is scheduled for this year in Brussels on 13 and 14 September. A date to mark on the calendar is Friday 30 August, when the 44th edition of the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea will be held at the Olympic stadium in Rome. We start with two stops in China, in Xiamen today and later in Suzhou.

In the first stage of the Diamond League Italy will be represented by Gaia Sabbatini in the 1500 meters, starting at 2.37 pm Italian time. The level of competition is exceptional, as always in the Diamond League, with the announced participation of 10,000 meters world champion Gudaf Tsegay and other high-level female athletes such as Diribe Welteji and Freweyni Hailu. For Sabbatini, this will be the first outdoor competition of the year, about 48 days from the European Championships in Rome and about 100 days from the Olympics. Sabbatini has already recorded a time below the qualifying standard for Paris, being the second best Italian ever in the 1500 meters.
