“Sinner? So sanctified that in a while…”: Panatta’s original comment

Lifelong friends, teammates and doubles mates in the Davis Cup with Italy, Adriano Panatta and Paolo Bertolucci they were guests of Splendida Cornice on Rai 3. In Geppi Cucciari’s TV lounge they retraced some stages of their career, teasing each other in their own way. The two icons of Italian tennis, now television commentators, made fun of each other as they often do both on TV and on social media.

Panatta and Bertolucci, 60 years of friendship

Bertolucci begins regarding the titles won in his career: “He has won a little more than me, but he is also older, he started earliera”. Panatta’s reply targets the laziness that the former Roman tennis player has always attributed to him: “He passes for a great doubles player, but he was also a great singles playerhe won a couple of very important tournaments but since he didn’t want to do anything, to train, at a certain point he no longer played“. Then Bertolucci recalls the first meeting between the two: “I’ve been putting up with him for 60 years, we met when I was 11 and he was 12. He came from Tennis Parioli, I came from a small village in Tuscany (Forte dei Marmi), he already had a quiff and stole balls: he said that those outings were good and vice versa“. Panatta instead he reveals a backstory about a gift given to the friend many years earlier: “Last embarrassing gift? I gave him a horse when he got married because his wife was passionate about it. I gave it to him not out of generosity but because keeping a horse costs money“.
