The Castelfiorentino striker who died on the pitch was the brother of the Roma defender’s sister’s boyfriend
An illness on the pitch, a trip to hospital, death: the tragedy that took 26-year-old Mattia Giani away occurred three days ago in Campi Bisenzio (Florence), in the Eccellenza match between Lanciotto Campi and Castelfiorentino United. “Hi Matti. Today every thought goes to you, our little brother of our beloved uncle Elia. Dear uncle Eli, we are destroyed and there are no words, but we will hold each other and in the difficulties we will help you and your nieces to get up again. Mattia, who may the earth be light on you”: this is what Roma defender Gianluca Mancini wrote on Instagram immediately after the news of his death. Mattia Giani was in fact Elia’s brother, his sister’s boyfriend.
And Mancini himself, immediately after the goal with which he gave Roma the lead over Milan in the second leg of the Europa League quarter-finals, wanted to make a dedication to Mattia: after celebrating he waved the t-shirt, which he had also worn during the warm-up , with a dedication to the brother-in-law’s brother: “Hello Mattia, forever with us”. On the back of the t-shirt the names of all the family members.
