A new aeroscreen debuts in IndyCar, an idea for the future of F1?

On the weekend of the Long Beach GP, a new aeroscreen will debut in IndyCar which could represent an idea for the future of F1.

In the past the aeroscreen has been talked about several times as a possible idea for the future of F1. The project was then shelved in favor of the introduction of the halo, which proved to be fundamental over the years.

In 2018 Charlie Whiting analyzed the differences between the two systems following the accident between Alonso and Leclerc which occurred at Spa. In that case, the Spaniard’s McLaren ended up on top of the single-seater driven by the current Ferrari driver who emerged unharmed thanks to the presence of the halo. “The aeroscreen is ten times less effective than the halo“, Whiting said at the time. “This is a system that we have also tested in the past but the data led us to exclude this solution“.

Meanwhile the aeroscreen has continued to be a constant in the world ofIndycar who has continued to develop it over the years. On the occasion of the Long Beach GP weekend, in fact, a new version will debut, lighter than the previous one.

The resistance will be the same but the presence of titanium will reduce the overall weight of the aeroscreen. Furthermore there will be an air intake system which will aim to direct the air towards the pilot.

At the moment, the aeroscreen does not represent an issue with regards to the future of Formula 1. Over the seasons, the halo has in fact proven to be a system which, although it is criticized on an aesthetic level, significantly increases the safety of the drivers.
