At least ten people were killed in an explosion that devastated the bar Le Constellation in the luxury Alpine ski resort of Crans-Montana, Switzerland. At least ten were also injured. It is the first toll released by the local media which, however, hypothesize a much higher toll: “40 victims are feared”, writes the newspaper Brick.
The fire broke out during the night following one or more explosions, reports Swiss Radio and Television. The first explosion occurred around 1.30 am in the basement of the bar, while there were over one hundred people in the place. The area is completely closed to the public and a no-fly zone has been imposed. “Hospitals are overloaded with burn victims,” a doctor told the Swiss broadcaster. Local medical sources also appealed to the population not to overload the healthcare system: “Show solidarity by avoiding activities that involve risks.”
According to sources from the Swiss broadcaster, the fire was not arson: the origin is suspected to be accidental. Local media say the blast may have been caused by pyrotechnic devices. The images published show a building engulfed in flames and emergency services nearby. A source involved in the handling of the tragedy described the fire as “a major disaster”.
The police have set up a toll-free number for families and a press conference is scheduled for 10am. A Civil Protection helicopter with Aosta Valley Alpine Rescue technicians and a doctor on board also intervened to support the local rescue teams, at the request of the Swiss authorities for a medicalized helicopter.
“The Farnesina and the Consulate in Geneva are following the situation. Checks are underway on the possible involvement of compatriots in conjunction with the local authorities. Minister Tajani informed.” The Farnesina writes it on social media.
