Sergio Mattarella’s traditional end-of-year message delivered from the President’s Office at the Vetrata
«A difficult year ends. We are all aware of the reasons and, as always, we hope for better weather. Our expectation is first and foremost aimed at peace. Faced with the houses, homes devastated by bombing in Ukrainian cities, faced with the destruction of power plants leaving children, elderly, women and men in the cold of the freezing winter of those territories, faced with the devastation of Gaza, where newborns freeze to death in the cold, the desire for peace is ever higher and the refusal of those who deny it because they feel stronger becomes ever more incomprehensible and repugnant.”
This evening 31 December, at 8.30pm, on all television screens in Italy, ithe President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella delivers the traditional end-of-year speech, from the Studio to the Quirinale Window and broadcast to unified networks.
Mattarella’s eleventh message lasts 15 minutes and deals, as anticipated by Monica Guerzoni, with some central themes of current affairs, with an eye towards the upcoming year rather than the one just passed. The President touched on various topics, among them i ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Ukraineplacing emphasis, as far as our country is concerned, on the importance of social cohesion. However, the referendum on justice that divides the parties does not appear in the drafts of the speech.
Mattarella’s last greeting message, a year ago, ended with these words: «We are the hope our commitment, our freedom, our choices.”
