Covid Monitoring. New Cases Rise but Hospitalizations Still Stable

The occupancy of intensive care beds was also stable, at 0.3%. Another increase in new Covid cases in the last week where a +25% was recorded with infections rising above 2,600. This is what emerges from the weekly monitoring of the ISS and the Ministry of Health. As of 06/26/2024, the occupancy of beds in the medical area was 1.2% (751 hospitalized), stable compared to the previous week (1.2% as of 06/19/2024). The occupancy of intensive care beds was also stable, equal to 0.3% (27 hospitalized), compared to the previous week (0.3% as of 06/19/2024). Hospitalization and mortality rates are higher in the older age groups (hospitalization rate in the 80-89 and >90 age groups equal to 17 and 21 respectively per 1,000,000 inhabitants, rate of hospitalization in intensive care in the 70 age groups -79 and 80-89 years equal to 1 per 1,000,000 inhabitants. Mortality rate in the 80-89 and >90 age groups equal to 1 per 1,000,000 inhabitants).

Diffusion

The transmissibility index (Rt) calculated with data updated to 26 June 2024 and based on cases with hospitalization, as of 06/18/2024 is equal to 1.15 (0.99–1.32), a slight increase compared to to the previous week (Rt=0.99 (0.83–1.16) as of 06/11/2024).

The incidence of COVID-19 cases diagnosed and reported in the period 06/20/2024 – 06/26/2024 is equal to 4.6 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, a slight increase compared to the previous week (3.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the week 13/06/2024 – 19/06/2024). The weekly incidence (20/06/2024 – 26/06/2024) of diagnosed and reported cases is slightly increasing in most Regions/PPAA compared to the previous week. The highest incidence was reported in the Lazio region (10 cases per 100,000 inhabitants) and the lowest in Basilicata (0.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants).

The age groups that record the highest weekly incidence rate are 70-79, 80-89 and >90 years. The weekly incidence is stable in most age groups. The median age at diagnosis is 63 years, stable compared to the previous week. The percentage of reinfections is approximately 46%, stable compared to the previous week.

Variants

Based on the sequencing data available in the national I-Co-Gen platform (data extracted as of June 23, 2024), JN.1, with its sub-lines, represents the predominant variant in the last month of observation. The proportion of sequencing attributable to KP.3 is growing (equal to 27.6% in May 2024 vs 3.8% in April 2024). The KP.3 variant is subject to monitoring (VUM) by the WHO (https://www.who.int/activities/tracking-SARS-CoV-2-variants).
