EU, 6 out of 10 want the center-right

A month has passed since the previous survey: the month of both European and administrative elections in important Italian cities. A month is a long time in terms of changing opinions. We would therefore have expected strong changes. In reality, public opinion has not noticed positive or negative changes in the government’s actions, but rather a strong continuity.

For example, trust in the highest authorities of the State has undergone absolutely marginal changes. Trust in the President of the Republic has decreased by one point, while trust in the Meloni government and its president has remained unchanged. Antonio Tajani has gained one point together with Elly Schlein, in the negative area (one point less) are Giuseppe Conte and Matteo Renzi, while Maurizio Lupi, Matteo Salvini and Carlo Calenda remain unchanged.

How can we interpret this situation of relative invariance during a month that was extremely fought and discussed? We would have a specific answer. Everyone expected a situation of government reaffirmation in terms of image and this situation promptly occurred, as indeed happened in terms of the country’s history every time the European elections followed the national elections by one or two years. In a certain sense, the ancient saying “When you have an image, you carry it with you throughout your life”, was confirmed in these elections in which perhaps the idea that we Italians have little presence in Europe prevailed, that is among those who matter. On this great theme, the survey reveals strong doubts, because first of all the distance between those who say that the ability to decide in Europe and those who say the opposite is not very high (26 positive; 23 negative) and between those who say that Italy’s image has strengthened and those who say that it has weakened is always positive, but equally low (24 positive; 23 negative).

Ultimately: who really won the European and local elections in June? There is little doubt about this. 56% of Italians indicate the center-right as the real winner, against 22% who indicate the center-left and 22% who express no opinion.

At this point it would seem correct to me to think that Italians are asking center-right leaders to take on the task of positively changing Italy’s image in Europe. More than half of the population, in fact, indicates that the real winner of these elections has the task of presenting Europe with its own models for the future.
