Two asteroids are traveling towards Earth: is there a danger of an impact?

Next June 30th we will celebrate World Asteroid Daya holiday proclaimed to remember the Tunguska event – which struck the desolate forests of Siberia over 100 years ago – and to maintain a high level of attention towards these celestial bodies.

As luck would have it, however, this year this day will be anticipated by the arrival of two interesting asteroids, on June 27th and 29th. Both asteroids are small in size and are not at risk of impacting our planet, yet over the last few hours there are those who have thought of spreading fake news on social media about them.

Named by astronomers 2011 UL21 and 2024 MK, these asteroids are kilometers in size and if the first will pass a few million kilometers away from Earth, the second will instead overtake our planet far from lunar orbit.

Given their relative proximity, astronomers have classified them both as Pha-class asteroids, that is “Potentially Hazardous Asteroid”, but it is the space agency scientists themselves who reassure the population, asserting that the chances of one of these asteroids impacting the Earth are very low. Furthermore, even if this were to happen, they are so small that they would probably only reach the surface via fragments.

The asteroid that hit Tunguska in 1908 was much larger and faster. Thanks to the energy released by its impact, the Siberian forests were uprooted and folded for kilometers and it was a miracle that there were no deaths or injuries.

Currently, the most threatening asteroid for Earth is Apophiswhich according to calculations should approach our orbit between 2029 and 2036.
