No ESM approval for Italy. The Minister of Economy, Giancarlo Giorgetti, in a press point at the end of the Ecofin meeting in Luxembourg focused on the issue of the European bailout fund. “Parliament is not in a position to approve it and does not approve it”, he underlined in front of journalists. A short time later, Infrastructure Minister and League leader Matteo Salvini echoed him, underlining that the government has no intention of ratifying it. “It doesn’t help Italy, it’s another European madness”, he says.
“Impossible to ratify it soon”
“What’s new yesterday is that for the first time Gramegna made some reflections, evidently also taking into account the criticisms that we have always made to try to change it and bring it towards a use such as a European sovereign fund, for example in terms of defense, avoiding perhaps the individual national states having to go into debt or spend at a national level”, highlighted Giorgetti again. “But the discussion has only just begun and among other things it has encountered a lot of resistance from almost all countries, especially the Nordic ones. So there is not much hope of ratifying it in the short term, let’s say that it is impossible in the short term”, added the minister. Then he reiterated: “I simply said that introducing the topic of the ratification of the ESM at this moment seemed to me to be a bit, vaguely, throwing a little salt on the wound and therefore improper.”

Salvini: “We will never ratify the ESM, it is European madness”
The Minister of Infrastructure and leader of the League Matteo Salvini also spoke on the topic, on the sidelines of the presentation of the FS security academy. The deputy prime minister clearly said that Italy will never ratify the ESM. “It doesn’t serve Italy, it’s another European madness,” he said. When asked if it will be ratified, he replied: “No, never, imagine, it’s another European madness. They can approve it if they want because we don’t need it.”
