The Roma Pride 2024 procession started from Piazza della Repubblica. At the front were some motorbikes and behind them was the banner with the words “30 years of pride”, held by, among others, the mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri. Rainbow and Mario Mieli club flags are waved. Following, the first float with the godmother of this edition, Annalisa, on board, and the Ricchi e Poveri song “Ma non tutto la vita” on the speakers. There are over forty vehicles that will parade along the route.

The mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri, at the head of the procession, wore the rainbow sash instead of the institutional one. Several selfies and hugs with the citizens around him. Then he wore the tricolor again to continue the journey towards the Colosseum.

Arriving in via Cavour, Annalisa performed singing “Mon Amour” aboard the first float where, among others, the PD secretary Elly Schlein and the dem deputy Alessandro Zan were also present.

Among the rainbow flags, those of Palestine also fly at the Pride in Rome. The Jewish queer community will not participate in Pride after the Keshet Italia association raised the alarm of a climate of anti-Semitic hatred.
Songs by Elodie, Loredana Bertè, Loretta Goggi, songs from cartoons resonate from the parked floats that will parade along the procession towards Viale delle Terme di Caracalla.
“Continue to defend your ideas like Serena even if Giorgia is disappointed”, “Read Antonio’s monologues even if Giorgia is disappointed”, are some of the sentences that can be read on the Mario Mieli club float next to the silhouettes of the TV hosts and journalists, eight in total, “who sided with the LGBTQIA+ community”.

The mayor of the capital, Roberto Gualtieri, at Roma Pride recalled how the event is “a celebration but also a struggle” to “overcome all legislative, social and cultural discrimination”. Regarding the subway carriage with the rainbow colours, Gualtieri underlined how “beautiful” it is. It exists in many European cities, the controversies make no sense. We respect those who protest but let’s move forward with our choices”.

“We think that the position of the rights of LGBTQIA+ people is the indicator of the state of health of a democracy. We have decided to dedicate our float to the slogan “Free fagots in a free state” quoting the pontiff in one of his not very happy remarks which however allows us to put the question of the secularity of the state back at the centre.” Thus the secretary of +Europa, Riccardo Magi, at Roma Pride. “This is not an outdated issue as many mistakenly believe – he continues – in the world there are Islamic or other fundamentalist regimes that oppress LGBT people and there are also so-called illiberal democracies that go backwards and the same thing happens. We are sorry that in In Italy we have a government and a majority that are clearing state homophobia, they do it with the political culture that they express every time they speak.” This, concludes Magi, “is valid for Meloni as for General Vannacci but they also do it with others. Let’s think about the universal crime of gestation for others and other measures they have presented. It is more important than ever after thirty years to still be here” .
