«I confirm unanimous support for the United States proposal for a ceasefire, the release of hostages and the support and protection of the civilian population. We reiterated every effort to avoid escalation.” This was declared by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, on the sidelines of the G7 work. The Prime Minister from Borgo Egnazia reiterates that it is a “solution with the perspective of two peoples and two States”. And she adds: «Tomorrow evening we will approve the conclusions of the summit on which there is already consensus among the leaders». Not only that, for Meloni, «tomorrow is a historic day, we will welcome the Holy Father, it is the first time for a Pontiff at a G7, I am proud to happen under the Italian presidency». And again: «841 days have passed since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression on Ukraine. In this long period, the heroic resistance of the Ukrainians prevented Putin from carrying out his plan and the compactness and unity of purpose of the West ensured the attacked nation the necessary aid to defend its freedom. The G7 has clearly reiterated this commitment.”

The bilateral security agreement

As expected, the bilateral security agreement between the United States and Ukraine was also signed in the evening. Immediately after the ceremony, President Joe Biden gave a speech to highlight the importance of the document, in a press conference together with his Ukrainian counterpart. «Our goal is to strengthen Ukraine in a credible manner and increase its deterrence capacity», said the White House occupant, «and we will achieve this not by sending American troops to Kiev, but by supporting Ukraine with weapons, ammunition , work of intelligence, training Ukrainian troops. But also by investing in that country’s war industry, so that they can provide for their defense in the future.” And he reiterated: “Only with our support will Ukraine be able to resist.” Zelensky, who was at his side and who was at the G7 today where they discussed new aid and also the 50 billion from the summit countries obtained from Russian assets, thanked Italy for the invitation to the meeting in Puglia, and all allied countries that are providing assistance to Kiev: «Today is truly historic, this agreement clearly declares that US efforts to support Ukraine are aimed at victory».
