Tusk: «Europeans united on Kiev, crucial security guarantees». The video call with EU leaders

The European leaders gathered in a video call with Volodymyr Zekensky “agreed that security guarantees for Ukraine are crucial” and must be “specific and reliable”. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk reports this on X, indicating that tomorrow, after the meeting between Zelensky and Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago, the Europeans will resume “the conversation”.

During the discussion, Friedrich Merz, Emmanuel Macron, Giorgia Meloni and Keir Starmer, together with the leaders of the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway and the EU leaders, reiterated their support for Zelensky on the eve of a meeting with uncertain contours, linked – in the European reading – to the fickleness of Donald Trump, while at the same time underlining Europe’s role in averting a peace imposed from above. And remembering the 90 billion joint bridge loan package agreed on 18 December, at the center of President Ursula von der Leyen’s message. Zelensky and the Europeans will talk again immediately after the face-to-face meeting at Mar-a-Lago.

EU and US support, in Zelensky’s appeals, must however make a leap in quality: more solid, in weapons and financial resources, especially to support the production of armaments and drones. During the day, the Ukrainian president returned several times to the most sensitive dossiers – Donbass and the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant – reiterating Kiev’s red lines. “There are compromise proposals, but they are very sensitive issues”, was the message expressed in relation to the 20-point plan which hypothesizes the freezing of the conflict along the current front lines, with the possible creation of demilitarized buffer zones and, according to what Zelensky himself reported, also possible withdrawals of troops from the east of the country.

A step that would mark, so far, the most explicit recognition of the hypothesis of territorial concessions. The gaze, however, also goes beyond the war and is projected onto reconstruction, with a horizon that Zelensky places “until 2040”. With Washington, the Ukrainian president explained, we are working on a long-term roadmap that could require between 700 and 800 billion dollars. However, the Ukrainian president’s resistance is also being tested by an internal front that is rekindling in Kiev: the anti-corruption agency has announced a new investigation that would involve some deputies. NABU officials tried to enter Parliament to carry out searches, but were blocked by the security services.

Would go of Leyen: “Preserve the sovereignty and integrity of Ukraine’

“We welcome all efforts leading towards our common goal: a just and lasting peace that preserves the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, and that strengthens the country’s security and defense capabilities, as an integral part of the security of our continent.” The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, wrote this on social media at the end of the video call with Volodymyr Zelensky and the European leaders. “In 2026, the EU Commission will continue to keep pressure on the Kremlin high, to support Kiev and to work intensely to accompany it on its path towards EU membership,” he adds.

Meloni: maintain unity between Europeans, Ukraine and the USA to stop the war

A note from Palazzo Chigi informs that during the phone call with Zelensky, on the eve of his meeting with President Trump, «President Meloni shared and reiterated the importance, never before now, of maintaining unity of views between European partners, Ukraine and the United States to put an end to almost four years of conflict. Only through this solid unity of views can Russia be faced with its responsibilities and pushed to demonstrate a real willingness to sit at the negotiating table.”
