Yesterday the government received the trust. Night marathon to examine the agendas: the League’s agenda on stopping the increase in the retirement age also approved
At 12.55, a few minutes earlier than expected, the Chamber of Deputies gave the green light to the budget law in the same text approved at first reading by the Senate, with 216 votes in favor and 126 votes against. The deputies of the Democratic Party have raised signs in the Chamber of Deputies with the words “Meloni Disaster” written on them.. The Dems were immediately recalled by President Lorenzo Fontana.
Giorgia Meloni applauds the approval on Facebook talking about «serious and responsible operation, built in a complex context, which concentrates the limited resources available on some fundamental priorities: families, work, businesses, healthcare”. The Prime Minister underlines that the government worked «to make measures already started structural and to strengthen those that really impact the daily lives of Italians, maintaining faith in the commitments undertaken.” For Meloni the maneuver is «another step forward to give certainty to the nation and continue to build a more solid, competitive and capable of looking to the future with confidence». The Minister of Agriculture Francesco Lollobrigida he underlined that «with this budget law we continue to give concrete answers to the primary sector».
As regards the absence of parliamentary debate, the Minister of Economy and Finance, Giancarlo Giorgetti, on the sidelines of the final green light for the manoeuvre, he admitted: «The budget session «should last three months» and instead it was reduced to «two and a half months, unfortunately for n years», explained the minister, recalling that «many years ago there were two sessions both in the Senate Chamber. This has gradually been lost and I regret this.” On pensions he defended himself: «Here they say that we have extended the retirement age, in reality the government’s intervention has reduced the increase in the retirement age by two months in 2027 because it would automatically have increased by three months. Naturally, during 2026, if things continue to go well in the public finances as up to now, we will also try to reduce that extra month which would start from 2027″. The Minister for Relations with Parliament, Luca Ciriani, he thanked the deputies who spent the night in the Chamber to vote, and appreciated «a serious and concrete maneuver, attentive to families, businesses and which, continuing on what has been done in previous years, further reduces taxes and increases the national health fund to the highest level ever achieved».
After the vote of confidence and the all-night marathon – the examination of the agenda ended just before seven in the morning – the discussion resumed at 11 this morning. The deputies of FdI and Lega confirmed the positive vote, complimenting Minister Giorgetti for keeping accounts and reiterating the commitment on healthcare, fiscal revenue and taxes. «It is a budget law that has a virtuous path, to emerge from the infringement procedure a year earlier», he underlines in the Chamber Riccardo Molinari of the League. «This budget law is a further piece of a strategic economic policy» which combines «redevelopment and important reforms. The results of this policy can be seen and touched”, says the FI group leader to Montecitorio Paolo Barelli. The FdI Paolo Trancassini, on the other hand, criticizes the opposition: «You have different ideas on how to deal with things», he says, and then he accuses them of being contradictory even on weapons and military spending, and of not having a vision of the country: “I’ve heard about the liberalization of cannabis, about those who occupy homes, about those who wink at those who spit on agents.”
The opposition goes on the attack, speaking instead of an austerity measure, and accusing the government of having done “the patatrac”, words of Nicola Fratoianni (Avs) on pensions, «making Fornero worse with a gigantic mess». Above all, the agenda approved last night which asks the government to reduce the retirement age, effectively going against the provisions of the Budget law itself, is in the spotlight. “The great absentees are young people,” he notes Elena Bonetti (Action)While the M5S, with Daniela Tortospeaks of “political arrogance”, accusing Giorgetti of being the “biggest political chameleon of the last ten years” and instead defending the Superbonus: “Construction has been made to grow and you have no other alternative idea”. Democratic Party secretary Elly Schlein is very harsh: «Eating and taking care of yourself are the first concerns of Italians: we should take care of hundreds of thousands of families who are deciding whether to pay the bills or the rent, of the fact that there are six million Italians who are no longer able to take care of themselves, that the cost of food shopping has increased beyond measure. It’s an austerity maneuver – insists Schlein – while the EU certifies that we are at the rear in terms of growth, despite the Pnrr, which Meloni’s party did not want. It is a maneuver that does nothing on the cost of bills, there is not a shred of industrial policy. It’s a move that does nothing to protect families and businesses from Trump’s tariffs, which you have quietly accepted. In fact, you promised a 24 billion plan that disappeared into thin air. It is a maneuver that helps the richest the most, 85% of that rate reduction benefits the richest families. Helping the richest also means helping private schools instead of public ones, cutting the inclusion allowance: because for you poverty remains an individual fault, for us a social problem. While Sanchez gives a facilitated season ticket to all young people, Salvini increases everything. Rents are rising, and you have canceled the rent fund: what did it cost you to find 300 million for those at risk of eviction? You extended the retirement age for 95% of Italians, you also had to abolish excise duties, and you increased them too. After three years of government no one believes in it anymore, it is not possible that the responsibility always lies with the previous governments, with someone else. You risked the provisional exercise, but we offer you 16 good intentions, as many as the amendments we have presented”, says Schlein, listing all the “new taxes” and the “missing measures” to support the weakest.
At the end of the session, after the vote, the Hon. Valentina Ghio, representing Pd and Italia Viva, wanted to remember the lawyer Fernanda Contri, “who leaves a profound void in the institutional, civil and political life of the country”. The first woman to be appointed judge of the Constitutional Court, she experienced that historical transition as a fundamental moment for the new generations.
