Italia 90 – Alternative rock

Italia 90 – Alternative rock

It was the golden season of Italian indie-rock, from the saga of the CSI and bands born from their galaxy to the flowering of a noise, punk-rock scene, whose leading names are Marlene Kuntz, Afterhours, Prozac+, Verdena . The main innovation introduced by this scene was an innovative combination of the Italian language and the most up-to-date musical declinations compared to the Anglo-American pop rock scene. The Italian alternative music scene of the 90s actually produced a multitude of groups and projects, far beyond the few names mentioned, most of which had a following especially in the 2000s, with a proliferation of independent festivals, playing in social centres, self-producing records and CDs, forming new labels, publishing fanzines and magazines. All this ferment, rich in genres and subgenres, clans and tribes, represents a complex, widespread and articulated phenomenon. In many ways they are still the subcultures of the 70s and 80s, which are renewing and multiplying. But it is no longer possible to ignore them: even in Italy, the major labels have started investing in indie music. In the series of podcasts, each dedicated to a “Live in Rai” and a selection of interviews, the main groups of the Italian ‘alternative rock’ scene that flourished in the 90s are brought together. An episode is dedicated to each of them: Marlene Kuntz, Afterhours, Subsonica, Prozac+, Verdena. Interviews from the Radio Rai archive. Music and sounds: Live music from the Radio archive. Selection, editing, curation: Edoardo De Falchi
