Michele Bravi and his new album “what do you see when you close your eyes”: the interview
Descriptive text here

His new album “you what do you see when you close your eyes” will be out from Friday 11 April 2024. Obviously we are talking about Michele Bravi, currently busy as a judge on “Amici” for the second year in a row, winner of “X Factor” 10 years ago now, actor recently in “Finamente l’alba”, directed by Saverio Costanzo . All these things, however, do not overshadow what Bravi’s “core business” is: the singer. Let’s do this, making everyone’s work easier: Michele Bravi is an artist. All round. And he demonstrated it in a courageous new work that didn’t come straight away, but took time and research. Even empty. 3 years have passed since “The geography of the dark”, and the new album has experienced a sort of artistic block, unblocked by a book given to me by a friend: “The artist’s way” by Julia Cameron. This is what she said at the press conference.

For that book, Michele tries his hand at various jobs, taking on strange professions, but which little by little give him the inspiration to find his way back. A profitable game that then found a useful outlet in “Musicofilia” by Oliver Sacks. It is with his book, which analyzes what it means to have a perception disorder, that Bravi finds meaning for the common thread of the new album, also thanks to one word: “Palinopsia”. «Palinopsia comes to me in the book musicophilia, present nowhere except in a medical dictionary, which I had perhaps for my hypochondria. It is a vision-related disorder, meaning when you quickly close your eyelid, the image you are looking at remains for a fraction of a second and then the outlines of the image disappear. Sacks reflects on the meaning of reality, on artists. And palinopsia is the attempt to repeat a perception, art too. I decided that would be the concept.”

And from the impossible questions 13 songs are born, divided into three parts. The first part is called the gaze, composed of 4 songs. «It is the reflection on what we see of others, with others. It’s that moment when you stand next to someone. You stand in front of a scene and discuss what you are seeing with that person. It opens with “Journey through time”, a reflection on how we see time continuously». The second part of the album is called “the image”. It is the most carnal part, where there is more eroticism. «The whole love dynamic is told in a light-hearted, but also submissive way. More erotic, dirtier.” It is in this part that there is “French Malumore”, with Carla Bruni, which she spoke to us about during the interview. The last part is entitled “The Iris”. «If the second part is the one where the sound is loaded with a different sound. The last part is the completely more cinematic part. It has a very long intro.”

For Bravi it is the first time in which he tries himself as a producer, in almost all the songs, but even where he collaborated with other producers, he still took care of the arrangement. «I wanted a cinematic dimension, for me it is a concept album. The study that has been done is how it is composed for cinema, how the orchestra tells the stories. Verses and choruses are all different from one song to another.” But it is also the first album he made not as a single. And in fact “I fell in love with you” is dedicated to a special person. «I gave it to someone for the first time: to my partner. I started from the title of Tenco, with the aim of reversing the meaning of that song.”
