The European Parliament will vote today on the pact on immigration, negotiated with difficulty for more than one legislature. Even if the final approval of the member states is still missing, it is a step that comes at a key moment: less than two months before the European elections, in which the most extreme forces within the hemicycle are expected to strengthen. The vote is seen as an opportunity to legislate on migration. It is also a way to clip the wings of the far right, which has politically exploited this issue for years. Many of its critics argue that, if it succeeds, it will be precisely because it will tighten the conditions for entry into the EU without solving the underlying migration problem. Meanwhile in Spain, the debate on the regularization of hundreds of thousands of irregular immigrants has reached an extraordinary agreement among all political groups, except Vox. The plenary session of Congress approved on Tuesday a popular legislative initiative (ILP) to regularize foreigners who live and work in Spain illegally: we talk about it with Federico Baccini, journalist from EuNews and with Lorenzo Pasqualini, freelance journalist resident in Madrid, collaborates with several newspapers and is the author of the El Itagnol website. | Russia has announced plans to double the number of troops along its border with the Baltic states, fueling fears of a potential conflict with NATO within the next decade. Estonia’s capital Tallinn is preparing to increase military investment, allocating 3% of GDP to defense in 2024 and increasing the size of the armed forces by the end of the year. Estonia and Latvia urge other European countries to step up defense efforts, considering reintroducing conscription. Meanwhile, Romania is developing its military base at Mihail Kogalniceanu, becoming the largest NATO base in Europe, to counter the growing Russian presence in the Black Sea, aiming to host up to 10,000 soldiers and civilians by 2030: we talk about it with Valeria Eboli, full professor of international law at the Naval Academy of Livorno of the Ministry of Defense. At the microphones, Anna Maria Giordano.
