The unbearable lightness of preference

Maurizio Scaglione

Finished European elections they begin voting analysis. Now they will come out, like the “babbaluci” after the rain, fleets of analysts ready to have their say with the know-it-all obstinacy. And on with conspiracy theories, behind the scenes, agreements, traps, ambushes. But let’s go in order about the Sicilian elected officials.

The first criticism, harsh and fierce, will be on the genre. You elected only eight men, no women. Once again these imperialist males. These elections in the islands constituency were the clear demonstration of how useless and fake gender alternation is. Imposing by law the choice of certain candidates is never a correct democratic exercise and in any case it is clearly useless.

According to this principle, after gender alternation (and why only man and woman?), What will these great statesmen of equality invent to get young people elected too? They could do generational alternation, forcing applications by age group. The list could be made up of 10% of candidates within the age of 30, another 30% between thirty and forty and so on. But wait a moment, What do we do with geographical alternation? Said and done, 33, 33 and 33 between western, central and eastern Sicily. But it doesn’t end here. Let’s also add school alternation. A good 25% each of candidates with fifth grade, middle school, high school and university degrees. And we could continue, it seems like a game but, unfortunately, for some illustrious statesmen it is a serious matter.

I would like to remind supporters of gender alternation that to date the two major parties are led by two women Melons And Schlein simply with democratic consultations. Whatever gender it may be, it is not imposed by law or by forcing poor protections, but with cultural processes, political education and above all awareness and protection of ideas without hesitation or compromise. And this applies to both genders. Then let me understand, if the vast majority of those elected are male and the majority of voters are female, why do women vote for men?

Another reflection, does the preference favor the environments of economic and illicit powers? I don’t think that’s how long it’s been preference removed in favor of political appointees we are surrounded by saints and benefactors. Politics is the mirror of our society with the relative presence of respectable people and others to be forgotten. Since the existence of nominees with blocked lists or names, we have only seen a collapse of our democratic power of choice which, by law, has been transferred to the regional and national secretariats of the parties and lobbies. So the great result was to move from the lords of the cards to the lords of the central political powers. They choose for us. With preference, citizens could also make a mistake in their choice but at least at that moment they felt free, now someone makes a mistake for us. Nice profit for the citizens…

But have you wondered why a new electoral law that provides for the free choice of candidate by citizens is not on the agenda of any party? Have you ever seen a turkey celebrating Christmas? I see all political parties in agreement on this topic. Let’s not talk about it and let’s hold onto the power to impose our candidates on the blocked lists. The various governments have done nothing, and the oppositions including the current ones do not fight or barricade to restore this sacrosanct right to the voters. The party leaders in their central secretariats want to continue to choose their traveling companions in the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate of the Republic, many of whom are unknown to the voters, but well known to their appointees, often more for their compliance and subservience than for who knows what mysterious reasons quality or curriculum.

From here, finally, the theme of abstentionism. The considerations made above apply. Voters, citizens no longer want to be confined to the sad ritual of putting an ‘X’ on something chosen by other powers. Today we are obliged to share the choices of a political oligarchy of the right, center and left. They treat us like illiterates who, not knowing how to write, put an ‘X’ instead of a signature. So the only way the voter has to express dissent towards this electoral dictatorship is by abstention which represents, yes, a free choice. So long live the clear preference, without conditions, limits, restrictions and compromises. Anyone who wishes can run in the party they believe is consistent with their ideals, and citizens free to choose their candidate by writing their name and surname will return to the polls en masse. Then whether they choose well or badly they will evaluate it from the results and if they were to choose to vote for their friend or relative, at least they will have voted for their friend or relative and not that of some political leader.
