Will Ian McKellen return as Gandalf in the new film?

Tolkien fans have been buzzing ever since Peter Jackson And Andy Serkis have announced plans to make new films set in the world of The Lord of the Rings. And now there is one more reason to count the minutes that separate us from the exit.

The great Ian McKellen he has in fact expressed his interest to return once again to Middle Earth, once again taking on the role of the sorcerer Gandalf. Interviewed by The Times on the occasion of his latest theater role – Falstaff in the opera Player Kingsinspired by three different tragedies by Shakespeare – the English actor confirmed that Gandalf will be thereand that he would have already given it some thought. «Thanks to Falstaff I already have long white hair. And I haven’t shaved in months. But for now there is no script, I have not received any offers, there are no plans. Who knows… if I’ll still be alive!»he joked.

The actor, who today has 85 years oldchooses his next roles very carefully: «Life doesn’t go on forever. So when a script or a proposal comes to me, today I always think: “This could be my last job”. And if it doesn’t inspire me enough, no, I won’t do it.”

How he can play Gandalf again remains to be seen, considering that the recently announced film is a prequel to The Lord of the Rings centered on the character of Gollum. The film, which will inaugurate a new course of adaptations inspired by Tolkien’s works, bears the provisional title of Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum and all we know so far is that Andy Serkis will direct and return as the titular creature thanks to the motion capture.

However, how Gandalf will fit into the story (and whether McKellen will be able to play him again, given his age) is yet to be discovered. In the meantime, too Viggo Mortensen he did not rule out a return to the role of Valiant Aragorn.

What do you think, would you like to see these two great performers again in the new Lord of the Rings film?
