After the extraordinary performance of Bella Baxter in Poor Creature!, a role for which she won the statuette as best leading actress at the 2024 Oscars, Emma Stone reunites with Yorgos Lanthimos in Kinds of Kindness: The film marks the fourth collaboration between actress and director.
A few days before the prestigious awards ceremony, Searchlight Pictures has released the first official trailer for Kinds of Kindness. With a duration of 164 minutes, Kinds of Kindness is the Greek filmmaker’s longest film and marks a return to contemporaneity, but also to the experimental and highly allegorical language that has characterized Lanthimos’ filmography over the years. It is no coincidence that the director also returns to work with Efthimis Phippou (already co-author of Dogtooth, Alps, The Lobster and The Sacrifice of the Sacred Deer), with whom he signs the screenplay of the film. An “anthology” script and divided into three episodes, all set in the United States (Kinds of Kindness was filmed entirely in New Orleans, between October and December 2022) and only apparently disconnected from each other: in the first, an employee tries to regain control of his life; in the second, a policeman is worried because his wife, who returned home after disappearing, has transformed into a completely different person; in the third, the protagonist woman is looking for a spiritual leader endowed with specific supernatural powers.
“It’s a contemporary film, set in the United States: three different stories, with four or five actors playing a part in each story, so they all play three different parts. It was almost like making three films, actually”, Lanthimos himself declared in an interview published by the Guardian last December. In addition to Emma Stone, other faces known to lovers of the director’s filmography will complete the ensemble cast of the feature film: among these, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley and Joe Alwyn. Also noteworthy is the presence of Jesse Plemons, Hunter Schafer and Hong Chau. After the world premiere at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, where it was in competition, Kinds of Kindness will debut in Italian cinemas on June 6, 2024.
