Furiosa is the video game that allowed us to explore the desert aboard the Magnum Opus | Cinema

Furiosa: A Mad Max Sagaa film directed by veteran George Miller and set in the franchise created way back in 1979, has finally been released in cinemas. Above all thanks to Mad Max: Fury Roadthe saga was able to make the big leap, becoming a mainstream work loved by all those who look for one word in a film: action. This time, however, he is not the protagonist Max, but rather a young Furiosa played by the excellent Anya Taylor-Joy. The character also appeared in the aforementioned Fury Road, but this time Miller decided to explore her past, focusing on the events that led the heroine to develop her hatred towards Immortan Joe.

Let’s face it: the charm of the inverse of Mad Max it’s not something you feel about all post-apocalyptic sagas. The credit undoubtedly goes to the masterfully directed action scenes and the grotesque atmosphere that envelops every element of the films. Whether it’s clothes, characters or environments, the world created by Miller is so dirty and brutal that it leaves you spellbound, preventing the viewer from lowering their gaze and distracting themselves from what is happening on the screen. A sensation that we also often find in another language: video games.

So what happens if we combine the two? What emotions could a video game convey? Mad Max? Fortunately, we don’t need to strain our minds too much. In 2015, in fact, Avalanche Studios created a video game simply titled “Mad Max”. A title that must not be forgotten and which, as we will see throughout this article, has all it takes to become a “must play” for all those who are anxiously awaiting the release of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

YOU WILL HAVE NO OTHER CAR OUTSIDE THE INTERCEPTOR (OR ALMOST)

The plot of the game sees Max clash with Scabrous Scrotus, one of Immortan Joe’s sons. Following the violent fight, our protagonist manages to escape by the skin of his teeth, but loses his beloved “V8 Interceptor” car. Chumbucket, a bizarre mechanic, will take care of giving a Max a hand, setting up a new car (the Magnum Opus) to allow him to take revenge on Scabrous and recover his beloved vehicle. A real war then begins between the Plains of Silence. A war with an uncertain ending, but full of violence, explosions and anger.

Despite the initial confusion about the canonicity of the events of Mad Maxas time passed everything became clearer. The Avalanche video game, in fact, takes place before the events seen in Fury Road. Statement initially hinted at by George Miller himself, but then became official in December 2023, when film critic Drew McWeeny had the opportunity to read the Furiosa script. In the script, in fact, it seems that there are clear references to the 2015 title. A title which, at this point, will act as a bridge between Miller’s now imminent new effort and his previous film. Fans of the saga should therefore not underestimate this gem. A little gem that offers not only a story in line with what we saw in the films, but also damn solid gameplay.

ON BOARD THE MAGNUM OPUS

Let’s face it: the world of Mad Max he is certainly not cheerful or calm. Yet, as already mentioned, it exudes a morbid charm that entices us to find out more. A charm that makes us think about how interesting it could be to get behind the wheel of a car to speed through the desert and discover mysterious places and absurd stories. The real strength of the video game developed by Avalanche Studios lies precisely in turning these fantasies into reality, while allowing us to remain safe in our room with a pad in hand.

In Mad Max we will be able to decide whether to move on foot or aboard our trusty Magnum Opus, alternating hand-to-hand combat with high-adrenaline car races. The result is a game that transmits the same sensations as the various films, with a particular nod to the Fury Road of 2015. This is evident from the presence of atmospheric events such as sandstorms, which not only turn the colors towards the red like in Miller’s film, but which require great attention from the player to avoid dying without even realizing it.

Added to this is also an excellent system for upgrading your car, which can be modified in terms of structure, weapons/skills and aesthetics. The video game of Mad Max it allows us to understand how the car is a necessary element to survive in the Plains of Silence. An element that ceases to be a “simple” object, but which becomes the only way to stay alive. An oasis of peace in the middle of a desert of chaos.
