Among the most anticipated films of the summer it stands out in particular Alien: Romulus, spin-off of the franchise created in 1979 by Ridley Scott with the masterpiece Alien. Total Film has released a new image of protagonist Cailee Spaeny, in which she appears to be holding a flamethrower trying to face a fearsome Xenomorph.
The sci-fi thriller by Fede Álvarez will bring the saga back to its origins, telling the story of a group of young space colonizers who, while delving into the depths of an abandoned space station, find themselves face to face with a terrifying alien creature. In addition to Priscilla star Cailee Spaeny, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu also participate in the film.
The screenplay was written by Álvarez together with Rodo Sayagues sui characters created by Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett. The plot of the film is temporally placed between the events of Alien and Aliens and compared to the latter chapter, Romulus presents a group of protagonists who are totally unprepared for what they are forced to face. The inspiration came from a deleted scene from Aliens.
“My first instinct, to try something different, was to approach it from the point of view of characters who are not professionals or scientists” explained the director “I liked the concept of putting these people in the foreground of the story and bringing them closer to the audience, unaware of the reality in space. When the characters are professionals they know more than you”.
