As we reported in recent weeks, the apocalyptic saga began in 2002 with 28 days later is preparing to return with the long-awaited third chapter. The new film, entitled 28 years laterwill see the return behind the camera of Danny Boyle who will direct a large number of stars in the new film.

Surprisingly, it seems that among these there will be none other than Cillian Murphyprotagonist of the first unforgettable film and fresh from the Oscar awards obtained with the imposing Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan.

The Irish star had revealed his involvement in the production as executive producer. The president of Sony Pictures Entertainment Tom Rothman, however, confirmed during an interview released a few hours ago that Murphy will be part of the cast and that Jim, his character, will be reintroduced into the story in a way “amazing“. In fact, when asked directly, the executive responded:

«Yes, but in a surprising way and destined and evolving, let me put it that way. This is Danny Boyle at his best, combined with a very commercial genre, as already happened with Edgar Wright and Baby Driver. Sometimes, when you put a very auteur director in a commercial context, you elevate it

As of now we know nothing about the plot of 28 years later. However, it has been confirmed that the film will tie in with the events of 28 days laterthe progenitor film directed by Danny Boyle himself in 2002, which was followed by the sequel in 2007 28 weeks later directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo.

As confirmed in recent weeks, the new film will once again be directed by Danny Boylewhile the screenplay will be edited by Alex Garlandcurrently in theaters with his Civil War. As for the cast of the film, the presence of has been confirmed Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, Jodie Comer and, apparently, of Cillian Murphy.

Sony won the rights to the film in January, at the height of a tight auction with other distributors. The major now seems to be feeding big plans for the franchise, with this new film which should be the first of a new trilogy which will count on the writing of Alex Garland. To direct the second chapter, it seems that Sony has already eyed Nia DaCosta, former director of films such as Candyman And The Marvels.

28 years later will hit theaters on June 20, 2025.
