After fifteen years of wild ride, in 2024 Marvel Studios suffered a drastic stop: in addition to Deadpool & Wolverine there are no other films coming out, while it will arrive on Disney+, as well as EchoAlone Agatha: Darkhold Diaries.
On the occasion of the meeting with shareholders to announce the quarterly data, Disney CEO Bob Iger wanted to confirm the studio’s new production and distribution strategy, which from 2025 will see no more than three films released in cinemas per year and no more of two television series on Disney+.
The reason is to be found in Disney’s broader strategy of “reducing the quantity of productions and focusing on their quality”, particularly at Marvel Studios:
We are slowly decreasing the volume, we will probably do about two series a year instead of the four we had accustomed the audience to, and we will reduce the number of films from four to two, maximum three per year. And we are working hard in that direction.
There are a couple of good Marvel movies for 2025, we’re going to new Avengers movies that we’re particularly excited about. Overall I feel very satisfied with our plans. I focused on spending more time on this division. I trust our team so much, and the intellectual properties at our disposal, including those we’re making sequels to, are second to none.
In the case of television series, Iger pointed out that some of these (like Agatha) are “vestiges of what was our desire to increase the volume of series produced”.
What’s interesting is that when mentioning next year’s Marvel films, Iger talked about “a couple of titles” like Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts*, but failed to mention Fantastic Four, which has actually yet to film to begin despite having a release date set for July 25, 2025.
