The Hunchback of Notre Dame, new updates on the live-action remake. And that’s bad news
Descriptive text here

The hunchback of Notre Dame the beloved Disney classic which arrived on the big screens in 1996, has for some years now been among the titles expected to be added to the ever-growing list of live-action adaptations proposed in recent years by the House of Mickey Mouse.

The intention to bring Quasimodo in the flesh to the big screen was announced in 2019, but, despite this, the last five years have proved decidedly lacking in updates on the project. In any case, in the last few hours the issue has been addressed again by the producer Roy Conli in an interview given to ScreenRant.

Conli’s words, however, resonated anything but encouraging for those who await the return of The hunchback of Notre Dame in live action:

«I’ve heard of it too, but I haven’t no concrete information about. But I think it’s an interesting idea. I would like. I think it could be splendid. I also think it’s Alan Menken’s best score. I love it. But I also think that Treasure Planet could be a great live-action movie, and that’s another idea I had about twenty years ago.

Although not very explicit, Roy Conli’s words don’t seem to leave much hope for the film. In May 2023, composer Alan Menken himself revealed how the film’s progress had stalled, citing some adult and religious issues which could make a live-action adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Damand a sort of time bomb. In an interview given to ComicBookMenken stated:

«I have no idea. It’s a difficult one, because the story of the Hunchback of Notre Dame predicts many real problems, very real ones that are important and therefore must be discussed before being explored. We need to agree on how to deal with them. Do we want to make a film about the Hunchback without the song ‘The Flames of Hell’? I do not think».

Some aspects of the film would actually be difficult to deal with in a live-action remake. Quasimodo, for his part, is a disabled character, and is immersed in a extremely crude context and characterized by a fervent religious climate that makes no concessions to the various diversities represented there.

As of now, the last word has not yet been said but, with these premises, a live-action remake of The hunchback of Notre Dame seems to become more and more unlikely every year.
