X-Men ’97 (review here) has received rave reviews from fans and critics, and all signs point to it currently being Marvel Studios’ best television series (both live-action and animated projects). We know that the second season is coming and, probably, there will be a third too. Furthermore, as is now known, a film about the X-Men in live action. Some fans, however, wonder if there will ever be an animated film dedicated to the famous mutants, perhaps as a conclusion to the events narrated in the series.

Inverse recently met with the directors of X-Men ’97, Chase Conley, Emi Yonemura And Jake Castorena and asked them if they would like to bring the X-Men to the big screen. “First of all, it would be an opportunity not to be missed,” Conley says. “I think it would absolutely be something that audiences would want to see and that we would want to be a part of“. He adds that the advantage of an episodic format means the creative team can make “many adapted comic book series“, but recognizes that a film budget would allow them to “do as much as possible and spend a lot of time working on each shot“.

With animation, the more time and money we have, the better“, explains Conley. “It’s a fact“. Yonemura, meanwhile, already has ambitious goals for a potential animated X-Men film. “It seems like we’re already making cinematic-level animations and events. But just to have the budget and time to make it a full feature film, and to do a bit of what they did with Spider-Verse and the recent animated Turtles film“.

One of our influences was Japanese animation from the 80s and 90s“, has continued. “Akira. Ghost in the Shell. Those levels. It’s like: Hey, do you want to give us the money and the budget to do it for you? But for X-Men ’97? I’d love that“. Castorena concluded by saying: “Seven seasons and a movie. Let’s go! If the love and demand from the fandom is there, and Marvel wants to let us do it, it would be amazing to bring these X-Men, these characters, this style and this work to the big screen“.
