Siena, 8 February 2023 – Earthquake in Siena: there are six tremors warned and recorded by Ingv (National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology). The first in magnitude 3.5 with a depth of 8 km with its epicenter in Siena, it was warned at 21.51. Two and four minutes later two more tremors were registered, of magnitude 2.4 at a depth of 9 km and always with an epicenter 2 km from Siena. Then the swarm continued with a 2.1 quake at 22.02; of magnitude 2.7 at 22.08; magnitude 2 at 10.10pm and magnitude 2.6 at 10.36pm. These are the data reported on the Ingv website.

Citizens poured into the street without a second thought. Fear downtownbut also in the suburbs. The earthquake disrupted the evening of the Città del Palio just when many were in their homes. “Never felt such a strong shock”, “Siena shook, how scary”, “Never felt an earthquake like this”, “In Colle Valdelsa it felt great, the bed moved”: these are some comments on social media that immediately welcomed the first reactions of the frightened residents. Most rushed into the street in house clothes, even without shoes. Thus Piazza del Campo was filled with people in a few moments. Many young people, but also families with frightened children.

“The operators of the Civil Protection and personnel of the Municipalities – says the president of the Giani Region through his Telegram channel – are carrying out checks and providing assistance. I thank all the women and men of our civil protection system and the people of the bodies involved in these minutes. The regional room is fully active. At the moment there are no critical situations”.

At the moment there is no damage in Siena after the earthquake, they let the Municipality know, explaining that the mayor of Siena Luigi De Mossi and the town hall technicians are around to monitor the situation. “The Municipal Police have also been alerted and are around to collect reports and give information to citizens. No damage has also been recorded by the Municipal Police”, they add from the Municipality.

Schools closed

Schools closed of every order and degree, on February 9, following the earthquake of 3.5 registered tonight, followed by a seismic swarm with tremors of magnitude 2.7. The closure of the schools was communicated by the Municipality: the decision was taken “also to allow facility evaluations. At the moment, however, there are no critical issues on the properties “. Again to complete all the checks, also closed the two university.

Mangia Tower

Following the earthquake that had its epicenter in Siena on Wednesday 8 February, the Torre del Mangia in Piazza del Campo will be closed tomorrow. The Municipality explains that the measure was arranged to complete all the checks but that at the moment there has been no damage to the famous tower.
