LECCE – The traditional Passing of the Gavel ceremony was held yesterday evening in Torre del Parco, a symbolic event of great importance for the Rotary Club worldwide, which saw the official handover of power in the Lecce club between the outgoing President Giuseppe Tamborrino and the incoming President Mario Moroni.
Mario Moroni, former president of US Lecce, will lead the Rotary Club of Lecce for the 2024-25 academic year.
The evening, which opened with a message sent by the new mayor of Lecce Adriana Poli Bortone who proposed a constructive collaboration between the club and the municipal administration, saw the presence of numerous civil authorities and Rotarians. After the official ceremony of the passing of the “collar”, Moroni took the floor for his first speech as President:
“I was co-opted into the Club only 6 years ago and I immediately felt at ease – he explained – both for the quality of the people I met and because, having the privilege of coming from the world of volunteering, I realized that the points of contact with the operations and mission of Rotary are truly many: friendship and spirit of service are, in fact, an essential combination of our modus operandi. Thus, the realization of service projects ‘above any personal interest’, ‘sharing them with the Members’, have implemented my sense of belonging and I hope they will guide me on the path that I begin today”.

During his speech, the President illustrated future projects: “I will focus my action on the needs of the community present in our territory and its real needs, with a strong and prevalent attention to Man. Man, who must be at the center of strategic philanthropy, not a mere ‘charity’, a philanthropy that can and knows how to satisfy not only his primary needs, but which also promotes the social reintegration of individuals in difficulty , promoting their social integration also through work relocation, which ultimately restores their dignity”.

The strategic plan and the program of activities for the year 24-25 contain four macro-areas of intervention: local socio-economic development; fight against diseases; support for education; protection of the environment and health. In particular, the Moroni presidency will carry forward a project, already anticipated by president Tamborrino, with the Accademia della Carità (a non-profit association for social promotion registered with the Third Sector whose president is Alessandro Valenti) that for the homeless people welcomed develops socio-cultural, targeted and individualized paths, and through the culture of hospitality and interaction, aims to promote the social and work reintegration of the individual in difficulty. To this end, Memorandums of Understanding have already been stipulated with Confindustria Lecce, CISL and ASESI.
Finally, Moroni introduced his team. The board will be composed of: President Mario Moroni; Vice President Paolo Fedele; Secretary Raffaele Parlangeli; Prefect Simonetta De Vincentis; Treasurer Andrea Corleto; Councilors Francesco Baldassarre, Francesco Micali, Filippo Muratore, Amedea Nielli; Francesco Spagnolo; Claudio Spano; Club Instructor Giuseppe Seracca Guerrieri; Past President Giuseppe Tamborrino; President Elect Cosimo Gallo; Executive Secretary Luigi Giuri.
Six commissions are foreseen: Membership Commission (President Leonardo Panico and councilors Vincenzo Arsieni, Giacinto Colucci), Projects Commission (President Ivana Melo, councilors Fabrizio Benvenuto, Giuseppe Santarpino), Rotary Foundation Commission (President Francesco Mariano Mariano, councilors Fabio Corvino, Antonio Quarta) , Rotaract, Interact and Youth Policies Commission (President Filippo Muratore, councilors Tobia De Luca, Lula Giubba), Club Image and Public Relations Commission (President Luigi Giuri, councilors Paolo Pagliaro, Franco Ruggiero), Culture Commission (President Elisabetta Branco; Councilors Beatrice Thus, Isabelle Oztasciyan Bernardini).
