Three teams of firefighters from the Viale Europa command, Villa San Giovanni and Melito Porto Salvo are currently engaged in putting out the fire that is affecting a warehouse used as an electrical material storage facility located in the Spirito Santo area.
The smoke, visible from much of the southern area of Reggio, has engulfed all the adjacent homes, from which all the resident families have been evacuated. The operators are fighting hard to ensure that the flames do not spread to nearby buildings.
Forty families were evacuated as a precaution; the flames were quickly put out by the intervention of the Fire Brigade who are currently carrying out a clean-up operation in the affected area.

Fire brigade teams from the Reggio Calabria Command have been busy since around 12.10pm in via Spirito Santo, in the southern area of the metropolitan city, for a fire in a shed of approximately 200m2 with a metal load-bearing structure, walls in insulated panels and a sheet metal roof.
The shed was used to store various types of electrical material.
Teams from the headquarters, detachments from Villa San Giovanni and Melito were involved in the firefighting operations with the support of water supply tankers, self-protector wagons and rescue officials for the coordination of operations for a total of 9 vehicles and 25 Fire Brigade units.
The flames completely engulfed the structure causing its structural collapse.
The high temperatures and thick smoke caused by the combustion also damaged the external facades of some buildings located nearby, making it necessary to evacuate 40 families as a precaution.
Intervention by firefighters was able to contain the fire, preventing the flames from spreading to nearby homes. The situation is now under control and the last fires are being extinguished and the site is being secured.
No injuries to people were reported.
Investigations are underway into the origin of the fire, no hypothesis has been ruled out at the moment.
