A prison police inspector was arrested in Poggioreale prison, Naples, for attempting to introduce narcotics into the prison.
The agent, Antonio Zuzolo, had hidden 590 grams of drugs in a sock: the deputy prosecutor of Naples Fabrizio Vanorio ordered the arrested inspector to be taken to the Caserta prison of Santa Maria Capua Vetere.
For the Uspp, with the president Giuseppe Moretti and the regional secretary Ciro Auricchio, “we must remove from the Corps the bad apples that damage the honor of the Penitentiary Police whose task is extremely delicate, both in protecting order and security, and in guaranteeing the treatment and recovery objectives”.
“In the more than 200 penitentiary institutions of the nation – the unionists underline – the work of the Corps is inspired by these values and deserves to be exalted, also because it is often invisible”.
“Despite the considerable difficulties and the long-standing shortage of staff, – concludes the Uspp – with enormous sacrifices, the Penitentiary Police Corps fulfills its institutional mandate but in the Poggioreale prison, where the rate of overcrowding is high, over 150 agents are missing”.
Satisfaction for the arrest was expressed by the Campania prison superintendent Lucia Castellano: “This is the third operation of the penitentiary police in Campania – superintendent Castellano told ANSA – but the fact that the bad apples, belonging not only to the penitentiary, are identified and neutralized, means that we have the right antibodies against this sad and unacceptable phenomenon”.
For the superintendent, however, “a change of pace is necessary on security: these measures are accompanied by provisions issued by our structure that intend to make entry into prisons increasingly similar to that into airports”.
