06/29/2024 TREVISO – Many faithful reached the church of Santa Maria Maggiore to greet Father Luigi Bassetto one last time. The Belluno Prosecutor’s Office investigates his death. || A thousand people said goodbye for the last time in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore to Luigi Bassetto, the Somascan father who died at the age of 80 in Feltre hospital. A tragic end still shrouded in mystery: the Belluno Prosecutor’s Office has in fact opened a case for manslaughter on the death, investigating a nurse on charges of having given the priest an excessive dose of morphine. But this was a time for pain, not accusations. Father General José Antonio Nieto Sepúlveda officiated the mass. Father Ottavio Bolis, rector of Santa Maria Maggiore, also remembered him. Father Luigi’s brothers were also present in mourning. Father Bassetto was originally from Roncade. He was parish priest of the church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Treviso from 2000 for 10 years, after 50 years of priesthood he spent his last days at the castle of Quero, in the province of Belluno, where he was lovingly cared for.
