“More than two months have passed since the TAR ruling that ordered the evacuation of the construction site in Piazza Cavour, and yet nothing has changed since then: one of the most important public spaces in Salerno is still not accessible to its citizens”. This is what the group leader of Oltre Donato Pessolano said. “As always happens in situations over which our administration is competent, the timetable has not been respected, although this no longer concerns the construction of a public work, but the simple dismantling of a construction site, which is also inactive.

At the beginning of May – as announced by the Mayor’s chief of staff – the reopening of the two connecting streets that cross it was planned; at the end of the month, however, that of the entire square: the latter did not happen and the future developments of the affair are a cause for great concern. But this is not the only emblem of the collapse of the liveability of our city, which continues to manifest itself also in the lack of care of the now chronic public greenery: this too is a criticality that I have denounced several times together with colleagues from the Oltre group, the last of which during a recent press conference in which I highlighted the many shortcomings that still exist in the sector.

The state of neglect in which flowerbeds and trees are found affects the whole city, from the eastern area to the viewpoint of via Benedetto Croce: the gateway to the Amalfi Coast, one of the most evocative corners of our Salerno – which has also been closed for years and kept in terrible conditions – it is difficult to access for tourists. Furthermore, to walk on foot, visitors are forced to walk directly onto the roadway for a long stretch, as the pavements are impassable. Another critical aspect that constantly arises every summer is the presence of rats and cockroaches which continue – since there was no adequate prevention during the spring season – to proliferate undisturbed in many areas of the city. On this point too I have requested intervention from the competent institutions several times, without any positive feedback”. “The administration hides behind astonishing and imaginative declarations on urban decorum, forgetting that Salerno has no longer been a garden city for some time now: we need to act quickly before the foundations of liveability in our city disappear”, concludes the group leader of Beyond.
