A 53-year-old worker, Antonino Giompiccolo, died this morning around 11 am inside a winery along the provincial road Comiso-Chiaramonte, in Ragusa. According to an initial reconstruction, the man was crushed by an articulated lorry that was manoeuvring in the yard belonging to the Avide company.

The 118 ambulance intervened on the spot and the helicopter rescue was activated. However, there was nothing that could be done for the worker. The surveys were carried out by the Carabinieri of the Comiso station, also present the Spresal for the checks on safety at work. In the square there are no cameras and there are no witnesses. The body is now in the morgue of the cemetery of Comiso at the disposal of the deputy prosecutor Ottavia Polipo who will have to decide whether to order an autopsy.

Italy holds the dramatic European record for country with most deaths in the workplace (Eurostat data 2020) and agriculture is one of the sectors still in greatest difficulty: in fact, every 2.4 days a farmer dies and the main cause of death is the loss of control of the agricultural vehicle (Inail data). According to the report of the National Institute for Insurance against Accidents at Work, between 2019 and 2022 an average of 150 deaths per year were recorded in agriculture, with a maximum peak of 171 in 2019 and a minimum of 137 in 2022.

Wheel Detaches From Truck on Highway, Flies Across Lane, Hits and Kills Driver

In addition to the numerical data, work-related deaths in agriculture hide a further alarming aspect. Taking the year 2022 as an example, if we relate the 137 work-related deaths to the total number of reported accidents (26,459), we obtain a rate of 0.52%, much higher than that observed for the “Industry and services” and “State Account” categories (0.18% and 0.04% respectively). The Inail report indicates that 3/4 of the victims are Italian, the rest are Indian nationalities and, subsequently, Moroccan, Albanian and Senegalese. Furthermore, only 53% of the victims are employees and of these, 8 out of 10 have a fixed-term contract while approximately 40% are self-employed with a large majority of direct and/or family farmers.
