Piazza San Francesco d’Assisi in Matera reopens to the public this evening following the safety, redevelopment and functional restyling work it has undergone since the beginning of 2024. Completed although not entirely, after long months of waiting, the famous city square is finally usable again. A small ceremony to the tunes of the Choir of the “Vissi d’arte” school, tomorrow at 8 pm, will deliver this historic space and important point of reference in the city center to the citizens, where it will be possible to celebrate the traditional morning mass on July 2. The mayor of Matera Domenico Bennardi on the matter: «It was not easy but we did it thanks to the seriousness of the executing company that I thank and to the excellent monitoring and control work carried out by the municipal offices. I also thank the Choir “Vissi d’arte”, which wanted to offer the municipal administration and the citizens its auspicious performance. After the party, the final touches will be made and then the square will be completely accessible with a new look, more accessible to people with disabilities thanks to the three access ramps, and safer for all pedestrians thanks to the lowering of the steps and the general level of the square”.
