VIAREGGIO. Fifteen years today since that 29 June 2009 which profoundly affected the families of the 32 victims of that cursed night of derailment on the tracks just outside the station, LPG leaking and catching fire, destruction, deaths, injuries. Viareggio will not fail to be there today, as always. Because what happened has precise responsibilities, with names, surnames, roles defined and the then CEO of Trenitalia in prison, in Rebibbia, for months. This was established by the five sentences (for now) which condemned the CEOs of Ferrovie and its companies, as well as those of the European companies involved in the Viareggio massacre. We are now awaiting the reasons for the Cassation’s bis ruling. So that the third trial can be scheduled in the Court of Appeal in Florence, whose judges the Cassation has asked to recalculate the generic mitigating factors.

The strength of Viareggio

«Ours was a battle for justice», he recalls once again Marco Piagentini, who was severely burned on that night which took away his wife and two of his children, who were still very young: «A battle which saw the responsibilities for the Viareggio train disaster emerge and which was not fought only by the families of the victims. But from the entire community of Viareggio and beyond. This is a great strength. And people must know how important their contribution was in having obtained, for the first time in Italy, a similar result on ascertaining responsibility for major disasters.”

The program

The 15th anniversary of the train disaster begins at 11 am, at the Misericordia cemetery, where the Archbishop of Lucca, Monsignor Paolo Giulietti, will officiate the religious function. At 6:30 pm, at the amphitheater of the Pescatori church, in Darsena, the show “Non c’è mai silenzio”: a reading for 4 voices with Elisabetta Salvatori, Marco Azzurrini, Luca Barsottelli, Fabrizio Brandi. At the end, a buffet and then, at 9 pm, the departure of the procession that will end in via Ponchielli. Where the students of the Jenco and Piaggia schools, in addition to the young actors of the Teatro Rumore, will read the names of the 32 victims of the massacre.

Reading that will come at the end of the interventions, entrusted to the associations and family members of those who disappeared violently (road accidents, at work, the Gifas massacre, the murder of Manuele Iacconi) and transformed pain into testimony, memory, civil commitment.

The parade

The departure of the procession is set at 9pm, this year from the Fishermen’s church, in Darsena (piazzale Don Sirio Politi). It will parade along Via Coppino, touching Piazza D’Azeglio to reach Corso Garibaldi and the headquarters of the Green Cross. Then, across the Pisa bridge and overpass, you will arrive in via Ponchielli.

The railway workers

From yesterday evening until midnight today with the whistles of the trains the railway workers will once again be close to the pain of their families and of an entire city. «In order not to leave them alone during the painful anniversary and not to lose the collective memory of what happened», are the words of the railway workers of “Ancora in Marcia”».
