Despite the treatments and long hospital stays, Giulia She still managed to take the final exam like her classmates. But she did it at the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute from “off-site”, thanks to the School in Hospital program.
The adventures of the 18 year old from Cassino began two years ago due to a bad moped accident. First Giulia was first hospitalized in Rome, then for several months last summer in Bologna for surgery at Rizzoli. In March a further long hospitalization is necessary in the Orthopedic Reconstructive Surgery and Innovative Techniques department directed by doctor Dante Dallari. Here, thanks to the Hospital School, Giulia can keep up with her class. The daily teaching activity with lessons and tests is agreed between the teachers of the school of origin and those who work in the hospital, teachers of the Scappi Institute of Castel San Pietro from Patricia Parma.
In May, Giulia was discharged and returned home, but then a new hospitalization in early June made it necessary to urgently activate the procedure to take the state exam “off-site”, as the professor explains. Antonella De Tommasi who coordinates the Rizzoli Hospital School. “Graduation, in addition to being a highly symbolic moment as a life passage, is also an official public act, which requires a rigorous formal process – he says -. Thanks to the collaboration between our school, the Lazio School Office, the management of Rizzoli and the examination commission of the school of origin, we were able to organize all the steps necessary to guarantee Giulia the possibility of taking her exam also if hospitalized, and we are really happy about this.”
Written and oral tests carried out at Rizzoli
The written tests, Italian and Economics, were sent via certified e-mail to the hospital management, with identical deadlines compared to the school locations. Giulia carried out the tests sitting in bed, isolated by a screen, in the presence of the coordinating professor and teachers from the Scappi Institute with delegation from the examination commission established in her school. Today you took the oral exam, connected from Rizzoli but included in the calendar of your class.
Don’t break the thread with life outside the hospital
“Even for the healthcare personnel, the graduation in the department was a special circumstance – comments the general director of Rizzoli Anselmo Campagna – and there is no doubt that having prevented the breaking of the connection with life outside the hospital, of which maturity is a very important part, was a great help to Giulia’s journey.”
The high school – the elementary and middle schools were already present – was born in Rizzoli, first headquarters in Italy, in 1997thanks to an agreement between the Orthopedic Institute, the Education Authority of Bologna (now the Regional School Office) and the Association for the study and treatment of bone and soft tissue tumors (formed by Rizzoli operators to improve the treatment prospects for bone tumor patients).
The teachers of the subjects common to all study courses come from the Scappi Institute of Castel San Pietro, officially appointed to follow the school in the hospital. They are supported by other teachers, including volunteers. Over the years, school has become a habit in the ward, also thanks to the commitment of the healthcare staff who plan how to reorganize the activities based on the patients’ academic commitment.
