Quartu, Refugee Day: «It is important to focus on social inclusion»

On the occasion of World Refugee Day 2024, the meeting “Immigration between numbers, people and perspectives” took place in Quartu, at the former Capuchin Convent, organized – as part of the SAI Project (Reception and Integration System) San Fulgenzio – by the diocesan Caritas of Cagliari through its operational arm Fondazione Caritas San Saturnino (Project manager), and by the Municipality of Quartu Sant’Elena (Project owner), in collaboration with the Diocesan Migrantes Office.

The day was an opportunity to take stock of the reception and inclusion paths carried out in the local and regional territory, starting from the general data contained in the XXXII Caritas Report on Immigration 2023, distributed during the works. The guest of the day was the Archbishop of Cagliari Monsignor Giuseppe Baturi and the boys and girls who witnessed experiences of integration in the territory.

Don Marco Lai introduced the morning’s proceedings: «There are 120 million refugees in the world, 3 out of 4 flee from climate change, the others from wars. A phenomenon of large proportions and in continuous growth: in the last 10 years there have been 64 thousand deaths at sea, 8000 have died in 2023 alone. Don Lai still quotes the words of Pope Francis: “On the occasion of the 24th World Refugee Day the Pope expressed four fundamental verbs: “Welcome, Promote, Accompany, Integrate. Refugee Day recognizes the strength and perseverance of people who flee their lands to seek a better future. We must embrace this hope, recognize humanity in ‘other and take charge of it as the Holy Father says.”

Then the Councilor for Social Policies of the Municipality of Quartu, Marco Camboni, intervened: «Quartu is the owner of a reception project that has been carried out by previous administrations and that has found full continuity also in this legislature: we try to build a model of inclusion and reception, also through the many social inclusion projects that aim to promote rapid integration into the fabric of our community. However, we find ourselves in a context full of complexity that must necessarily be considered beyond the borders of our territories».
