Spotlight on the recovery and refunctionalization project of theformer Regina Margherita hospital which represents a strategic opportunity for Messina. This is the objective of the regional deputy Alessandro De Leo which announces a note to be transmitted to the President Schifani, to propose the start of a political table to “define the redevelopment process of the pavilions of the former Regina Margherita hospital in Messina and the birth of the Citadel of Culture.. This week De Leo will meet with the regional councilor for Cultural Heritage, Francesco Scarpinato, on the topic.

On March 3, the Messina parliamentarian presented a question to the Ars on the real estate complex of the former Regina Margherita hospital, inserted a few weeks ago from Meloni Government among the sites receiving the Cohesion Development Fund (FSC) 2021-2027 with a financing of 16.8 million euros.

“It is a battle for Messina and for the people of Messina that I am carrying forward through the discussions already had, and further ones soon on the agenda, with the regional government – explains the Hon. De Leo -. Now we have reached the turning point to put an end to the state of abandonment and degradation that has afflicted the structure for too long. We need to go beyond the important aspect of the resources found for financial coverage, make the most of this endowment and capitalize on it through the most appropriate choices. The updated intervention plan must avoid overlaps and unfortunate evaluations“.

Within the scope of the FSC 2021-27 funds, projects relating to the following have been included among the fundable projects: renovation of the pavilions of the former Regina Margherita hospital in Messina. Specifically, these are pavilions 1, 2 and 3, which as part of the reconversion of the real estate complex which will become the seat of the Citadel of Culture, will host the new headquarters of the Superintendency for Cultural and Environmental Heritage of Messina, the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of the earthquake.

“Iinitially – Continued by Leo -, as foreseen by the resolution of the Regional Council n. 163 of 7 May 2020, the renovation of pavilion 10 was also envisaged, in addition to the already mentioned 1,2 and 3 for the aforementioned purposes. Pavilion 10 appears to have been intended to host the regional library “Giacomo Longo”, institution that boasts a history of almost three centuries, currently housed in the premises of the Archbishop’s Curia in via I settembre. In the Fsc 2021-27 fund plan, the intervention that finally after many years could give a stable and permanent home to one of the oldest cultural institutions in the city was not included in the financing. The need to provide the aforementioned cultural institution with a stable and permanent home is of primary importance, and deserves a certain and rapid resolution to be found within a political table”. “The Citadel of Culture – concludes the Hon. De Leo – must represent an added value for Messina. We trust that the works can start as soon as possible and that, through a strategic comparison on the activities to be carried out, we can thus return to the City of Messina an area of absolute cultural and social value”.
